Week after week, she heard them echoing in the hallways outside New York immigration courtrooms as masked federal agents made arrests.
She met a 10-year-old girl who called out, âWhy are you taking my papa from me? Heâs the only one I have.â
And she listened to the wails of a 12-year-old who watched officers arrest her father, saw an ICE agent hurl her mother to the ground and then worried that she was to blame because she hadnât held onto her father tightly enough.
âI wouldnât have expected to see this happening here,â Guzy says. âI go to other countries to cover this kind of stuff.â
The freelance photojournalist has won four Pulitzer Prizes covering disaster and war around the world. Now sheâs shifted her focus to one of the biggest stories in the US.
For much of the past 11 months, Guzy has witnessed and photographed arrests during the Trump administrationâs immigration crackdown, and she's heard the cries of children like 10-year-old Scarleth, whose voice you can hear at the top of this page. But Guzy says thereâs more to the story thatâs often overlooked. Her photos â including many that are published here for the first time â underscore realities that are often hidden. And even the photos she takes in crowded spaces reveal details many rarely see.
